Using reverse micelle templating as a universal route for nanoparticles, we have been able to produce various core-shell nanoparticle structures with interesting magnetooptical effects. Both polymer and Au shells around a metal oxide core have shown unusual magneto-optical properties. By exploiting the magnetic properties of the nanoparticles and enhancing them with a gold shell, we show potential for optical isolation, which is essential for a wide range of optical applications.
