Abstract
The metaphor of the victim which may turn into a victor, often used in Canadian literature, may be applied to the constitutional debate. The definition of national identity partly depends on multiculturalism which is a successful attempt to accomodate the diversity of its population but the real issue at stake is how to create a multinational state likely to guarantee the recognition of its two “founding peoples” including the Aboriginals.
