Situado dentro del campo de investigación del álgebra temprana (Blanton et al., 2017; Cai & Knuth, 2011; Kieran, 2018; Kilhamn & Säljö, 2019), este artículo se centra en la comprensión de los jóvenes estudiantes de las ideas básicas en torno a la simplificación algebraica de ecuaciones. El artículo busca contribuir al campo de investigación arrojando luz sobre los procesos de producción de significados que sustentan la simplificación de ecuaciones y las operaciones algebraicas involucradas. En la primera parte, se presenta una concepción teórica del pensamiento algebraico. También se describen dos sistemas semióticos no alfanuméricos que fueron diseñados para introducir a los estudiantes a la simplificación algebraica de ecuaciones. En la segunda parte, se analizan dos episodios de estudiantes de tercer grado (8-9 años de edad) que resuelven ecuaciones de tipo ax+b=cx+d.
