Abstract
Significance The region is highly vulnerable to climate variability. The Dry Corridor -- a band of territory that runs from Guatemala to Panama and is home to around one-quarter of the region’s population -- is at particular risk . Impacts Economic growth will suffer as drought leads to blackouts and higher electricity prices, and reduces agricultural output. The risk of social unrest will increase as food prices rise and power cuts worsen. Health outcomes will worsen as the impacts of water shortages affect sanitation, allowing illnesses such as diarrhoea to spread. Limited national budgets will encourage governments to look for new sources of funding for infrastructure projects, such as China.
