Abstract
En 2022, l’English National Opera présente une nouvelle production de l’opéra de Poul Ruders adapté de The Handmaid’s Tale, un roman fondé sur les dérives totalitaires d’un projet utopique dont les dérèglements sont la matière même de l’intrigue. Cet article interroge le rapport à la règle dans les métamorphoses intermédiales qui jalonnent la genèse de l’oeuvre, telles que relatées par son librettiste, Paul Bentley, dans un ouvrage quelque peu irrévérencieux qu’il consacre aux arcanes de cette création musico-littéraire.
