Dans The Mastersinger from Minsk de Morley Torgov, l’inspecteur Hermann Preiss, accompagné de sa maîtresse, la violoncelliste Helena Becker, est confronté à Richard Wagner, menacé de mort le jour de la création de son opéra Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg , à Munich en 1868. La fiction de Torgov se nourrit de faits réels pour construire un dossier à charge contre Wagner, antisémite notoire, et pour rouvrir le débat sur l’indépendance de l’oeuvre vis-à-vis de l’artiste qui l’a créée.
