Abstract
With environmental concerns, alternative sources of protein with a low environmental footprint are being investigated for both humans and pets. Insects can provide high amounts of proteins, fats, vitamins, and mineral elements with great economic and environmental advantages. Insects are a good environmental option as an alternative protein source and additionally may supply insoluble fiber through chitin, which has the potential to be a good prebiotic. Black Soldier Fly Larva (BSFL) is the only insect that has an ingredient definition in AAFCO for adult maintenance dog food.
