Abstract
Significance Wheat exports are expected to rise by 60% to almost 20 million tonnes (Mt) year-on-year, and oat and barley production is also up. As its agricultural output increases, Canada can serve as a pivot producer, helping to consolidate trade with Europe while increasing sales of niche grains. Impacts Farm sector growth averaged more than 5% per year during 2012-22, with much of the momentum coming from crops, and this should continue. While much of Western Canada continues to suffer varying levels of drought, excess moisture is impacting crop quality in Quebec and Ontario. The UN estimates almost 1 billion people face food insecurity, which has increased since the pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
