Abstract
To Reach Japan, the first short story collected in the Nobel Laureate writer Alice Munro's valedictory short story collection Dear Life, manifests women's shared dilemma in marriage and relationships by depicting the protagonist Greta's in-and-out marriage contact with men. The present study probes into Greta's world with Feminist Literary Criticism and Psychoanalytic Literary criticism, focusing on her feminist struggle and the revelation of her ID, EGO and SUPEREGO along with the interplay of the two on her action. It is concluded that Greta, though a housewife, did not give up her poet dream, and the three men in her life, Greg-her chance-encounter lover on the train trip to Toronto, Harris-her potential soul-mate lover, Peter-her practical and least poetic husband are the reflections of her ID, EGO, and SUPEREGO respectively.
