Abstract
Introduction 7Our identity bears both hereditary and cultural lineages that shape who we are and how our lives have unfolded. This study provided me with the opportunity to connect with my own Ukrainian heritage and better understand its significant cultural impacts on the development of western Canada.People strive to improve their lot in life, and if they are unable to reach that goal, then they try to provide that opportunity for their children. The Ukrainian settlers who immigrated to western Canada in the late 1800s and early 1900s embodied this spirit of a quest for a better life.Hardships, sacrifice, and uncertainty became daily challenges of life on frontier homesteads. The adversities they faced were more than offset by their deep religious faith and remarkable spirit of perseverance. The capacity of both young and old to work long and hard under demanding conditions became a significant survival attribute. The Ukrainian settlers not only overcame the wilderness challenges of their newly adopted country, but lived to prosper from the bountiful opportunities and abundant natural resources it provided. As my elderly informants vividly recalled memories of those early days, there were numerous occasions when the tone of their voice noticeably weakened and quivered. For some, tears stained their face as they struggled to tell of the seemingly endless hardships and challenges of homestead life.Other recollections brought strength to their words and pride to their faces as they described their own family's, or subsequent generations', accomplishments. The trials, tribulations, and successes of the Ukrainian settlers are not isolated or unique in western Canadian history. Many other ethnic groups achieved similar results through similar efforts.

Full frame machine prediction
Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; the direct Gemma label and the distilled Codex classifier agree on what is shown here.
