La lernejano Detlev Blanke lernis Esperanton aŭtodidakte en 1957. Kiel studento en la Universitato de Rostock li komencis aktivi por la movado, antaŭ ol ĝi estis oficiale permesita. Poste li helpis krei la organizan kadron por Esperanto en GDR. Ekde 1968 li estis sekretario en la Kulturligo, respondeca pri Esperanto. Paralele li dediĉis sin al interlingvistiko kaj Esperantologio (doktoriĝo kaj habilitiĝo en Humboldt Universitato, Berlino). Dum multaj jaroj li estis por esperantistoj en kaj ekster GDR la ĉefa vizaĝo de la orientgermana movado. Li ĉiam konsciis la cirkonstancojn de fermita ŝtato kaj zorge atentis, ke esperantistoj ne kunpuŝiĝu kun la aŭtoritatoj. Lerte li klopodis ekspluati la ŝancojn de Esperanto en la 'niĉo', kiun la reĝimo allasis. Post la ekrego de Gorbaĉov li komencis transiri al pli (mem)kritika pozicio. En 1990/91, en la procezo de germana reunuiĝo, li kontribuis al la kuniĝo de la okcidenta kaj orienta Esperanto-asocioj en Germanio. En 1991 li kunfondis Societon pri Interlingvistiko, kiun li prezidis dum dudek jaroj.
