Abstract
Writing into the Margins a s a n e w f o u n d l a n d s c h o o l c h i l d in the 1950s, I encountered the appalling story of the eradication of the Beothuk.I learned that, on June 6, 1829, the last surviving member of her Nation, Shanawdithit, died of tuberculosis, in captivity in St. John's.The settlers who had captured her named her Nancy, and I read about her in my Grade 5 history book, The Story of Newfoundland and Labrador by Frances Briffett: "Nancy was the last of her tribe and she died of tuberculosis although everything was done to help her." 1 U.A. Fanthorpe has written a poem about the Nativity called "BC : AD" and in it she speaks of "the moment when Before turned into After." 2 As a ten-yearold in St. John's, I thought of the extermination of the Beothuk Nation in exactly the same way-first they were around, then they weren't.It wasn't until I read Michael Crummey's first novel, River Thieves, 3 that I thought about the element of "During"-the liminal period when the Beothuk were gradually wiped out, and the terms of their extermination or survival were
