Abstract
The essay examines the scientific work of the prominent historian of the second quarter of the 19th century A.D. Chertkov (1789-1858) in the light of his travels in Western Europe and participation in the activities of the Society of Russian History and Antiquities. This direct interaction with the treasures of foreign libraries, museums, and private collections, combined with personal communication with fellow historians, gave impetus to the development of new research topics. The discussion of Chertkov's works by the members of the Society of Russian History and Antiquities contributed a lot to his scientific work. Books, manuscripts, coins and other material valuables brought by him from foreign trips served as a significant basis for Chertkov's scientific creativity, and subsequently acquired the status of a national treasure.
