Abstract
Lily Dougall (1858–1923), a Canadian novelist who became a theologian in England, was a contributor to, and representative of, the early twentiethcentury theological movement known as English modernism. This essay, marking the centenary of her death, amplifies five aspects of her religious progressivism which underlie her modernist commitment – her writing as a woman; her domestic independence within a network of educated women; her commitment to group work; her openness to ‘fringe’ movements; and her conception of divine power – and it indicates those aspects of her life and work which continue to be of significance for theology today.
