Abstract
How did Peace Arch Hospital Foundation (White Rock, British Columbia, Canada) raise over $1 million and earn the ACE award for Best Fundraising or Non-Profit Event? Vicki Brydon, director of public relations and events, reveals their secrets: “The Peace Arch Hospital Gala is an annual black-tie fundraiser that consistently raises the bar in terms of fundraising and guest experience,” Brydon notes. “A theme is chosen every year with the goal of taking the guest on a journey of décor, entertainment and fun activations. Our guests have fun, are visually blown away by how we transform an aging hockey arena and, each year, we strive to create an event that is completely different from the year before … whether that's different room set-up, moving the stage, different table sizes, incredible décor elements or amazing entertainment. We want them to expect the unexpected, and every year they say we will never be able to top ourselves. And every year, we do.” This two-minute video shows how they transformed the arena into an Alice in Wonderland experience in 2023. The gala includes a mingling cocktail hour, a plated three- to four-course dinner, silent and live auctions, a Fund a Need, various forms of entertainment and a party band to close out the night with dancing. This year's hybrid event included a virtual raffle in addition to the in-person live raffle and a meal from a local restaurant delivered to ticket holder's homes. Brydon explains how this year's event raised over $1 million. “Each year we choose a compelling case for support that we know will appeal to our donors,” she reports. “We produce a touching video for the event that inspires donors to give, and we do our best to ensure the right people are in the room. Tickets to the event are heavily in demand, so we curate the guest list to our top donors and supporters. We choose unique and creative themes that excite our guests and exceed their expectations for every aspect of the event. We're also well-respected and trusted in the community to make an impact with every dollar raised.
