Abstract
The forced migration of refugees from National Socialism brought to Canada a small but particularly complex wave of 5,000 to 6,000 German-speaking migrants who had been forced to leave Europe on political, religious and/or racial grounds. Stigmatised and socially excluded in the old homeland, these exiles experienced loss and rupture, but also complex mechanisms of acculturation and the recomposing of identity. Their personal narratives testify to the complexity of the adaptation process.
