Abstract
This essay explores the relationship between sacramental theology and environmentalism, as a sacramental view of reality can both prepare the ground for environmental responsibility and cultivate a wariness of human pretensions. It then reads closely the expressive work of two very different Canadian artists—singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn and novelist David Adams Richards—in the light of this understanding, seeing the dynamic relationship of nonhuman nature and ineffable grace in Cockburn’s early work, and the stripping away of hypocrisy, with the implicit demands of human responsibility, in Richards—s novel For Those Who Hunt the Wounded Down (1993).
