Abstract
Chez les Maseual-Nahua de la Sierra Nororiental de Puebla, le catholicisme espagnol qui leur fut imposé il y a cinq siècles coexiste avec d’autres représentations et pratiques. Celles-ci concernent les multiples forces surnaturelles qui habitent un terroir enchanté : les Maîtres de la terre, de la faune, de l’eau, du feu, du maïs et les « Vents ». Ces esprits, qui habitent des « mondes autres », sont susceptibles de ravir ou de blesser l’une ou l’autre des entités animiques que possède l’individu : le « coeur-esprit » (yolot), l’« ombre » (ekauil) ou le « double animal » (tonal). Lorsqu’un mal résiste à la médecine des herbes, c’est qu’il a été causé soit par un « effroi », provenant de la rencontre avec l’une de ses forces, soit par l’envie ou le mauvais oeil, voire par un sorcier ou une sorcière. Seul un ou une chamane pourra alors diagnostiquer précisément la cause du mal. Dans un rêve divinatoire, il ou elle invoquera les Maîtres des divers « mondes autres » et négociera avec eux jusqu’à récupérer l’entité animique perdue, permettant la guérison. Tandis que les rituels communautaires sont conçus comme des dons-offrandes aux saints, les rituels chamaniques se déroulent sous le signe de la négociation et de l’échange, voire du conflit ouvert avec des esprits néfastes.
