Dans la société chinoise, les échanges matrimoniaux débutent dès les fiançailles, dont les points culminants concernent le don du caili 彩礼 offert par le côté du fiancé au côté de la fiancée quelques jours avant la cérémonie des noces, et le don du jiazhuang 嫁妆 offert par la famille de la fiancée à la famille du fiancé le jour même des noces. En s’écartant de deux théories dominantes — marriage payment theory et marriage endowment theory — dans les études existantes sur les échanges matrimoniaux en Chine, le présent article vise à proposer une nouvelle interprétation, en démontrant que seule la famille du fiancé se voit dans une obligation ritualisée et collective d’offrir les prestations matrimoniales ( caili ), sans lesquelles le mariage ne peut avoir lieu, tandis que l’offre du jiazhuang est facultative, personnalisée et secrète, s’inscrivant avant tout dans une stratégie familiale. Par ailleurs, puisque la spécificité du terrain chinois révèle une incompatibilité avec les travaux classiques en anthropologie de la parenté sur la « dot », le « prix de la fiancée » et la « dot indirecte », l’article cherche également à mettre en valeur les termes vernaculaires dans la compréhension de la société chinoise, tout en comparant et en faisant dialoguer les études existantes dans ce domaine et mes propres analyses.
