Les dynamiques des transferts culturels peuvent être saisies à travers les déplacements des oeuvres, des auteurs, des références; elles peuvent aussi l’être à partir de la circulation des catégories servant à caractériser ces oeuvres. L’étiquette du graphic novel est une bonne illustration de ces processus. Née aux États-Unis dans les années 1960, cette expression y a évolué entre différents espaces de commentaire et de production avant de se déplacer entre espaces nationaux. L’analyse de la collection « Marvel Graphic Novel » (1982-1993) et de ses importations françaises par différents éditeurs (Lug/Semic, Comics USA, Arédit/Artima, Panini) illustre la réception contrastée de cette étiquette en France, entre resémantisation et abandon. Les conditions de cette réception relèvent à la fois d’effets de contexte et de jeux d’acteurs : le sens d’un même format varie d’un pays à un autre, l’intérêt des acteurs à se saisir de l’étiquette dépend des stratégies éditoriales qu’ils déploient.
