Cet article se penche sur l’origine et la réception des Nombrils, série créée par les Québécois Marc Delaf et Maryse Dubuc dans le magazine pour adolescents Safarir en 2004, avant de s’exporter l’année suivante dans Spirou, magazine belge largement diffusé en France. En vue de cette exportation, des choix conscients sont effectués pour rejoindre un public à la fois nouveau et plus jeune : la série perd ses éléments québécois (notamment le vocabulaire) et adoucit sa virulence. Au moyen d’une analyse détaillée des huit albums parus, mais aussi des entretiens avec les dessinateurs adjoints, et d’un examen des échanges des auteurs avec leurs fans, notamment via la page Facebook qu’ils administrent, cet article vise à mettre en lumière la stratégie d’effacement de la québécité pour l’adaptation de la série à un public européen francophone. Au fil de la parution, alors que Les Nombrils obtiennent un grand succès public, les signes québécois réapparaissent sporadiquement dans les décors ou les références culturelles, mais demeurent discrets sur la question de la langue. Désormais plus visiblement américaine, la série n’en est pas pour autant perçue comme québécoise.
