Abstract
Cet article est le dernier d’une série de deux qui proposent de scruter le rôle croissant attribué à l’industrie touristique, premier secteur du commerce mondial, dans la conservation du patrimoine, dans la promotion culturelle et, plus important encore, dans la planification des villes. Un exemple récent en a inspiré la rédaction, ici, celui à Montréal du Quartier des Spectacles. En effet, on constatait que, en dépit d’une étonnante densité, particulièrement entre le pôle de la Place des Arts et celui de la rue Saint-Denis – on y dénombre plus de 25 000 places de spectacles, soit plus de la moitié de ce qu’on compte à Broadway –, l’offre de spectacles dans le centre-ville est de Montréal générait fort peu de revenus touristiques. Depuis le projet initial, la « vision » du Quartier des spectacles a donc évolué jusqu’à devenir celle, véritablement, d’un quartier urbain de près de un million de mètres carrés.
