Abstract
Si les images réagissent le plus souvent, elles ne deviennent véritablement impertinentes et profondément polysémiques que lorsqu’elles anticipent. Elles s’exprimeront autour du 18 Brumaire sur le premier modèle, adoptant un profil bas, entre louange forcée et réserve circonspecte. En revanche, elles avaient clairement établie, dès 1795-96, la marche du régime vers la dictature militaire, réagissant alors par anticipation. Le retentissement de Brumaire dans les images affirme-t-il donc, comme le propose de l’analyser Stéphane Roy, un éclat marquant la rupture ou la continuité ?
