Paru en 1948, L’Affaire Toulaév est directement inspiré par les procès dits « de Moscou » de 1938, lesquels eurent un grand retentissement en Europe occidentale et tout particulièrement dans son intelligentsia de gauche. Des grandes purges staliniennes, Victor Serge tire un roman très politique où le pouvoir stalinien qui a sombré dans le délire paranoïaque peut être associé à un idéologème complotiste. Le roman fait une foisonnante description du mensonge d’État en URSS et expose avec subtilité les prérogatives juridiques, les dispositifs administratifs et les distorsions par lesquels l’idéologie du soupçon impose une version officielle de l’histoire en cours : un ennemi, intérieur et extérieur, conspire contre l’État socialiste. L’écriture piste d’innombrables récits de persécution par la police ou les services secrets dans le cadre d’une enquête qui, en termes narratifs, repose sur une coquille vide. Comment dès lors élaborer une fiction du complot qui repose sur de la pure fiction ? Loin d’être simple, la question renvoie à celle de la vérité romanesque et de la capacité de la fiction à désigner le mensonge d’État comme tel. Cette réalité où tout est signe de trahison fonde l’ambivalence romanesque de l’œuvre et pose une question d’ordre herméneutique : comment distinguer l’interprétation du délire paranoïaque alors que ce dernier a toutes les apparences de la raison ? Dans une perspective sociocritique, cet article envisage donc les manières dont le texte de Victor Serge reconfigure un imaginaire du complot dans lequel se joue la présence au monde, la portée critique et la capacité d’invention à l’égard du social de ce roman injustement ignoré par l’histoire littéraire.
