Abstract
Le paradigme historique qui a été constitué autour de la république florentine pose un problème de méthode non négligeable à savoir l’hybridation entre une question historique et une question de théorie (et de pratique) politique. Rendre compte de l’histoire et de l’historiographie de la république florentine suppose donc de traiter cette ambivalence en passant au crible les événements autant que les récits qui en ont été donnés a posteriori (au nom parfois de convictions et d’engagements forts des historiens concernés, à partir du xixe siècle), l’histoire de l’évolution des institutions autant que les catégories explicatives qui ont été construites pour en rendre compte. Dans cette affaire, une attention particulière doit être accordée à la « qualità dei tempi » et aux « tempi avversi » (selon des expressions de Machiavel) qu’affonte une République qui est contrainte de se réinventer pour ne pas mourir en pleine guerre, à partir de l’automne 1494, après l’invasion de la péninsule italienne par les armées des monarchies nationales.
