Abstract
This chapter focuses on the 1962 Finjan Club concert and the crucial role it plays in creating Bob Dylan the performer in the way he chooses his songs, plays his songs, and plays his audience in a city and country not his own. As a notable locus for Dylan, Montreal also lays claim to his first concert performance outside the United States, at the Finjan Club in July 1962. While often cited among Dylan’s early shows, the Finjan Club concert is rarely discussed, despite being his first performance abroad, away from what he knew. The chapter argues that the sound of the room is as essential as Dylan and his songs are, and Dylan’s banter shows his developing wit, stage presence, and adroitness as he plays to, with, and against the audience. The chapter discusses Dylan’s gesture of song choice and performance, the setlist notable for two debuts, two second-time renditions, and seven one-time performances of songs presented in a public concert. The discussion of Dylan’s performance of the songs, himself, and his audience in this out-of-country concert provides a stronger understanding of the creation of the persona known as “Bob Dylan.”
