Venice without Venice: Traces of Italian Printed Music in German Manuscripts during the Thirty Years’ War

Abstract
This essay focuses on three manuscript sources in the Herzog August Bibliothek, fragments of music partbooks originating from churches in Helmstedt and Magdeburg ca. 1600–1638 [Cod. Guelf. Mus. Hdschr. 322–324]. They exhibit an increasing dependence on printed Italian musical sources and the steady encroachment of Venice as a musical commodity, relying both on German-edited collections and Venetian-sourced volumes. However, two of the featured “Venetian” composers in these documents had little to do with Venice—Ludovico Viadana and Isaac Posch—and offered a newly possible mode of musical mediation without the benefit of Venice as an interlocutor. These manuscripts demonstrate stylistic development and transformation in the first quarter of the seventeenth century and help trace the circulation of specific editions of printed music. They also remind us that in the early modern era, print culture and manuscript culture were not distinct entities, but survived and thrived side by side.
