Abstract

Cet article a pour objectif de mettre en lumière la vie des communautés rurales dans les Monts du Cantal à la fin du Moyen Âge. Ces communautés sont peu institutionnalisées mais très affirmées et tiennent leur cohésion de l’exploitation des communs. À partir du xiii e siècle se met en place dans la région un pastoralisme entrepreneurial. Il s’agira donc de voir ici en quoi ce système économique spécifique et propre à la zone d’étude influe sur le fonctionnement social et économique des communautés rurales et comment les structures communautaires et familiales sont amenées à se recomposer au fur et à mesure des évolutions et recompositions foncières de la fin du Moyen Âge. La notion d’habiter sera ainsi étudiée dans son sens le plus large, celui d’un rapport au monde et à l’espace particulier, qui est ici celui de montagnards vivant au rythme des estives.
