Abstract
Ship construction is heavily impacted by socioeconomic and environmental factors which in return impacted the timber selection process. Through human behavioral ecology theory, prey choice model then provides an adequate framework for the interpretation of ship timbers, from the forest to the shipyard. This chapter develops the prey choice model in regards to the timber acquisition process with the case study of the Machault, a 1757 French frigate scuttled in Canada. The utilization of a high-level theoretical framework in shipwreck interpretation then provides the necessary context to discuss ships in term of trade-off in timber choice, resource optimality and suitability, and forestry management practices.
