Abstract
This chapter considers the relationship of the state and individual at the margins of empire by comparing the careers of William Walker, a notorious filibuster from the U.S. who temporarily succeeded in seizing control of the Nicaraguan government, and Louis Riel, who led Métis resistance to the Dominion of Canada’s incorporation of Manitoba. The similarities between these two seemingly disparate episodes demonstrates the contingent nature of state consolidation in the nineteenth century.
