The Canadian Giallo , or how the Italian Thriller Influenced The Canadian Slasher Film

Abstract
While the connection between the Italian giallo and the slasher film has been noted by many scholars, this essay explores the connection in detail. Specifically, this essay looks at the Canadian-produced slasher films made between 1981-1983 as being particularly connected to the Italian thrillers, despite no clear or transparent referential. By focusing on key Canadian-made slasher films from this period, it is revealed they are connected more to giallo, particularly in how the films are ludic, playful, murder mysteries, more than horror films. Comparisons are made between these two cinematic forms through the ideas of the testamone occulare, the amateur detective, the ineffectual police, the sexualized murders, the discourse on modernity, sexual trauma, as well as the more obvious tropes of the black-gloved killer, the use of the I-camera, and the diversity of bloody murders in the films. The Canadian slasher film is deeply dependent on the Italian giallo.
