Abstract
The last couple of decades of the 20th century represented a turning point in the city’s Mardi Gras reinvention as once marginalized groups increasingly became a part of the mainstream. Chapter seven looks at how Mobile changed in the last quarter of the 20th century and ponders what is gained and lost when marked bodies’ celebrations go mainstream. It also places these developments in the context of the setbacks and tragedy that affected marked communities and bodies in Mobile and discusses a cinematic representation of the city’s segregated festivities.
