Abstract
“Slaves to the Community: Blacks and the Rhetoric of Selling Out” critiques Randall Kennedy’s work Sellout. In the post-civil rights era, blacks can achieve a great deal as individuals. However, the tension between the aspirations of the individual and the demands of the racial group create internal pressures (Touré 2011) that bring forth a divided self that mirrors the one Du Bois wrote about at the turn of the twentieth century. This is the result of a color line, drawn by white citizens in the past, but now solidified and reified by blacks in the present (Dickerson 2004). The rhetoric of ‘selling out’ functions as a mechanism of social control meant to keep blacks on ‘their side’ of the color line. It does so at the very moment it becomes possible for blacks to cross the threshold and become part of the American mainstream.
