Abstract This paper presents the self-propulsion simulations for a fishing vessel with an optimized bulbous bow and a four-bladed fixed-pitch propeller using the RANS solver in the open-source Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) package OpenFOAM. Steady simulations were carried out at the design speed without a propeller to validate the bare-hull resistance results against the experimental data. The open-water hydrodynamic characteristics of the propeller were then simulated with the Moving Reference Frame (MRF). Finally, the self-propulsion simulations were performed by changing the propeller rotational speed with the same forward speed. The propeller thrust and torque coefficients were compared with the experimental data. Discrepancies between the experimental measurements and the numerical results on the towing forces were observed.
