Ethnography and the Interpretation of Ancient Sociopolitical Structure in the Middle Fraser Canyon, British Columbia

Abstract
The traditional culture of the St’at’imc people, occupants of the Middle Fraser Canyon in southern British Columbia, has long presented a conundrum to archaeologists and ethnographers. Ethnography and contemporary traditional knowledge indicate that the St’at’imc maintained permanent winter villages held by powerful clans that controlled access to critical resources, maintained long distance trade partnerships, and hosted ceremonial events including potlatches. Because this pattern is different from typical cultural patterns elsewhere in the Plateau region (egalitarian family bands lacking clans) it has often been assumed that either the ethnographic St’at’imc cultural pattern was recently borrowed from Coastal neighbors or that older generation ethnographers were simply wrong in their characterizations. In this chapter, we draw on archaeological data from villages pre-dating 1000 years ago to test alternative sociopolitical scenarios. We argue that at ca. 1200–1300 years ago, St’át’imc sociopolitical organization likely included permanent long-lived villages, ranked house groups, and clans extending socioeconomic influence across multiple villages. We conclude that the St’át’imc cultural pattern had an ancient origin within the Mid-Fraser Canyon.
