Abstract
This chapter highlights the start of summer in the author's backyard. It begins by describing the juncos, which occupy most of the continent, but they are mainly migratory, overwintering in the US and breeding in Canada. The author then recounts how the crab apple tree in front of the house has bloomed and a female Baltimore oriole visited, working the flowers for nectar. By Thursday, a regular summer visitor was back: the catbird, which is a little smaller than the British blackbird and a kind of mockingbird. Friday was the day that the house wren arrived. The house wren is a little larger than the winter wren. And the winter wren is just one of nine species in the US, including five in New York State. Other visitors to the author's backyard include the Nashville warbler and the ruby-throated hummingbird.
