Abstract
This chapter highlights the crows that come and go in the author's backyard. The American crows in Ithaca have been studied for many years, in particular by the author's colleague, Anne Clark at Binghamton University. Many of the crows that visit the neighborhood in the summer and fall are ringed and tagged. However, few of the birds that the author sees during the day in winter are ringed and tagged. This is because of the massive influx of winter visitors, escaping the greater rigors of the Canadian winter. They spend their nights in roosts of thousands of birds at a few locations, mostly in town, and then go off to spend the day feeding elsewhere. One of the main roosts, with an estimated ten thousand birds, is a bunch of trees just behind the Ithaca ReUse Center on Elmira Road at the southern end of town.
