Abstract
This chapter highlights the role of an international treaty in chemical weapons arms control before World War II. While the Geneva Gas Protocol of 1925 governed international law regarding chemical warfare during World War II, multiple efforts, like the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, restricted and even prohibited the wartime use of gas after World War I. For Britain, treaties were a tool and a chain even if they were treated nominally as a shield due to public opinion and political pressure. The chapter elaborates on the effort of international attempts to formulate an international gas law that inspired trust in the interwar period. It also notes how gas protocols affected the United States and Canada.
