Abstract
This chapter frames the continental history of Civil War explored within <italic>A Continent in Crisis</italic> around the ideas offered by Philip S. Paludan’s 1972 article “The American Civil War Considered as a Crisis in Law and Order.” It suggests that the expectations that the citizens of U.S., Mexican, and Canada placed on their governments to create order across a politically heterogenous continent outpaced the power or foresight of those governments to do so. Drawing from the volume’s chapters it highlights the value of transnational histories that look to the peripheries rather than the centers of power for explaining the dynamic and processes that shaped the Civil War Era.
