Abstract
This chapter discusses the rebellions of the Vlachs in the Balkans, of Isaakios Komnenos in Cyprus and of Theodore Mangaphas in Philadelphia during the turbulent last quarter of the twelfth. It seeks to clarify whether these rebellions belong to the category of provincial separatism and whether they can be regarded as the outcome of a ‘problematic’ relationship and disparate identity between the imperial centre and its provinces. It argues that the three cases should be considered as distinct, since the Vlach rebellion represented political separatism, Isaac Komnenos attempted usurpation, and Theodore Mangaphas provincial revolt. A disparate identity came into play only in the case of the Vlach–Bulgarians.
