Abstract
This chapter seeks to square accounts of Jacques Audiard as a fundamentally conservative director with those that see him as a progressive one who daringly reinvents gender roles by suggesting that these are two sides of the same neoliberal coin. Confronted with their precarity and moving in typically violent genres, his males are forced to become flexible, collaborative and communicative, and to learn new skills, in order to survive and eventually triumph. Inviting us to move beyond narrowly individual-centred accounts of neoliberal subjectivity, they are also increasingly incorporated into entrepreneurial and flexible families. The chapter brings close readings of Audiard’s films into dialogue with relevant theory. It draws on Foucault, Dardot and Laval and Boltanski and Chiapello to explore the neoliberal subject, Lorey and Lazzarato to theorise precarity and Melinda Cooper to explore the flexible neoliberal family.
