Abstract
Pesquisas da Organização Mundial de Saúde para avaliar a evolução clínica dos transtornos mentais – incluindo seu diagnóstico, tratamento e prognóstico, mostram, desde a década de 70, que contextos sociais diversos determinam resultados clínicos diversos. Diferentemente do modelo de classificação e tratamento do transtorno mental, vigente na cultura ocidental, tecnicista e hiper-industrializada, a abordagem do mesmo fenômeno entre povos de culturas tradicionais se dá de uma forma que não segrega e nem isola o sujeito de seu grupo, ao mesmo tempo em que promove o acolhimento de seu sofrimento. Para ilustrar tais práticas, apresentamos a abordagem do sofrimento mental em três diferentes tradições: Ioruba da Nigéria, Umbanda e Espiritismo Kardecista. Concluímos que o cuidado recebido pelo sujeito com base no referencial cultural de cada uma das diferentes tradições permitiu a ressignificação de acontecimentos que haviam se tornado insuportáveis, e possibilitou o reordenamento de tendências psíquicas desagregadoras, corroborando a posição adotada pela Organização Mundial de Saúde, que considera o cuidado dispensado ao transtorno mental fundamental para o prognóstico da própria doença.
