Abstract
Cette étude sur Josué, héros du livre éponyme, s’interroge sur l’ambivalence de l’évaluation éthique du personnage. Considéré en effet comme exemplaire au point d’être un modèle des dirigeants d’Israël et des conquérants dans l’histoire, Josué apparaît comme la main armée d’un Dieu qui prend soin de son peuple en ordonnant le massacre de Cananéens innocents, affirme la littérature exégétique. Bien que le leader soit aux commandes de troupes dont les actions ont été qualifiées de génocide par certains, le thème de « Josué et la violence » n’a paradoxalement pas fait l’objet d’une recherche approfondie. Malgré le fait que Josué soit protégé à dessein par le récit, nous soutenons qu’il est coupable des atrocités dont parle le livre, même s’il ne peut en être tenu pour responsable. Car la rhétorique du livre qui exalte la violence est un fait de culture et peut, en cela, servir de miroir à la violence impensée enclose également dans nos cultures.
