Abstract
Grasslands Grown is a history of settler-colonial place making and regional identity formation in the vast North American ecoregion that Molly P. Rozum calls the “northern grasslands” (p. vii). Rozum deliberately avoids using more recognized terms (northern Great Plains, prairie provinces) so that “the spatial, geographic, and environmental terms residents did use” can “appear, disappear, and move around free of the weight of present-day scholarly regional boundaries” (p. 10). To survey this transnational terrain, Rozum has engaged in prodigious archival work to create a complex group portrait of the region's first generation of settler-society children. This “grasslands grown” cohort spent their childhoods immersed in grasslands environments and went on as adults to shape larger discussions about the region's identity. “Parents of the grasslands-grown generations acted as settler colonials by claiming homesteads under the laws of the United States and Canada,” Rozum writes, and “their children furthered settler colonialism by drawing boundaries and creating senses of place to express cultural ownership in atmospheric and geographic regional terms” (p. 362).
