The volatility of wholesale prices for electricity reached their highest levels in decades and has put both energy retailers and households in Europe under economic pressure. Beyond the current geopolitical tensions, this volatility will keep increasing due to the integration of more and more renewable capacities into the European grid. This article highlights the relevance of considering the optimization and the monetization of residential demand side flexibility to reduce the electricity bill and the carbon footprint of residential electricity consumption. It demonstrates the feasibility and benefits of how the aggregation of decentralized, behind-the-meter Batterybased Energy Storage Systems (BESS) could be deployed, using the case of Zeeland in the Netherlands.
