Abstract
Regional initiatives relevant to Arctic environmental protection were substantially curbed this year due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In March, seven of the founding states of the Arctic Council—Canada, Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and the United States—announced a pause in their participation in the Council. In June, a further statement was issued announcing an intention to start limited resumption of work on Arctic Council projects but not involving participation by the Russian Federation. In March, members of the Barents Euro-Arctic Council, the European Union (EU), Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden also issued a joint statement suspending activities with Russia due to Russia’s military aggressions against Ukraine. International activities of note occurred in other venues. These activities included advancing implementation of the Agreement to Prevent Unregulated High Seas Fisheries in the Central Arctic Ocean and working through the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to further address Arctic shipping issues.
