Volatile environmental conditions in wildland firefighting impose significant cognitive demands upon personnel, often alongside sub-optimal sleep. Naturally, impaired functional cognition in this population poses a significant threat to worker safety. Sleep duration may affect cognitive functioning in this environment and exhibit differing effects in biological males and females. PURPOSE: To examine the effect of sleep duration on cognitive function in biological males and females. METHODS: An observational study was conducted on 11 wildland firefighters (4 F) across British Columbia between July and September of the 2021 and 2022 fire seasons. Sleep duration was measured via wrist-worn actigraphy (Polar Ignite). Cognitive function was measured via mean reciprocal response time (1/RT) in the psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) at the start of each shift. A two-way ANOVA was performed to analyze the effects of sleep duration and biological sex on PVT performance. Sleep duration condition was categorized as <7 hrs or > 7 hrs. Biological sex was categorized as Male or Female. RESULTS: Simple main effects indicated sex had a significant effect on PVT performance (p < 0.0001), with females performing better on average. Sleep duration condition also had an effect on PVT performance (p < 0.01). An interaction effect was found between sex and sleep duration on PVT performance (F(1, 128) = 13.277, p < 0.05); sex only appeared to have a significant effect on PVT performance when the sleep duration condition was <7 hrs, in which female participants sustained better PVT performance. CONCLUSION: Sleep duration and biological sex were significantly related to cognitive function. The differing effect of sleep duration on cognitive function in male and female participants suggests intersex differences in functional cognition preservation, which may have safety-related implications in occupational environments with sub-optimal sleep.
