Este artigo é um tributo a José Saramago. O texto apresenta algumas reflexões acerca do papel da escolarização em língua portuguesa para imigrantes brasileiros instalados na região do Quebec, Canadá. A partir de pesquisa exploratória – estudo de caso/ narrativa autobiográfica – faz-se uma análise de aspectos relativos à política de emigração deste país da América do Norte. Este trabalho foi executado durante o período em que sua autora atuou como professora visitante na Université du Quebec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) no ano de 2008 e durante os quatro primeiros meses de 2009, já como professora associada. Os dados coletados indicam desvalorização da escolarização feita na língua portuguesa e da cultura lusófona pela sociedade receptora. Tal situação se traduz em segregação no mercado de trabalho quebequense dos sujeitos desta pesquisa – selecionados como imigrantes qualificados justamente por serem escolarizados.
