Lorsqu’il est question de l’Inde, l’image exotique de l’ascète hindou mobilise l’imaginaire des sociétés contemporaines. Devenir ascète implique de vivre « hors du monde » pour se consacrer à la réalisation spirituelle. Pour les hindous de naissance, l’ascétisme se positionne d’emblée comme une voie à privilégier pour atteindre la délivrance ultime et pour garantir le maintien de l’ordre cosmique. Pour des personnes qui proviennent de contextes sécularisés, individualisés et matérialistes, choisir l’ascétisme relève d’un choix autonome et marginal, distinct, voire contraire à leurs obligations sociales et religieuses. Pourtant, certains ont quitté leur héritage culturel et religieux d’origine pour arborer la robe couleur safran et adopter un mode de vie ascétique dans un contexte où traditionnellement, l’on ne devient pas hindou, mais on naît hindou. En plaçant l’accent sur le vécu de leur spiritualité, l’analyse montre que leur constitution d’un soi spirituel est soumise à un processus incessant de validation, tant subjective que collective. Référant d’abord à la notion de saṃskāra, soit les traces laissées par les vies antérieures, pour justifier et interpréter leurs choix, ces ascètes valident ensuite leurs pratiques ascétiques dans l’interaction avec leurs pairs par la définition d’un cadre autoréférentiel de reconnaissance qui leur est propre.
