Abstract
John Smol (Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada) has been awarded both the Martin Bergmann Medal for Excellence in Arctic Leadership and Science from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and the McNeil Medal for the Public Awareness of Science from the Royal Society of Canada. The Martin Bergmann Medal recognizes excellence in Arctic leadership and science, with John's announcement reading “True to the spirit of the award, he is well respected in Canada and internationally for his research, his prolific array of publications, his outreach t o the public, his mentorship, and as an ambassador of Arctic science.” The McNeil Medal is awarded to a candidate who has demonstrated outstanding ability to promote and communicate science to students and the public within Canada.
